Inspired by two historical figures Angelina and Sarah Grimke and Sarah’s slave Hetty also known as “Handful”.  The two sisters were born in Charleston, SC in the nineteenth century into a wealthy southern family.  The story follows their remarkable journey after Sarah is given Hetty, to serve as her handmaid, at the age of 12.   Sarah and Angelina grow up and despite their mother’s wishes both get involved in the abolition and women’s rights movements.  A wonderfully written fictional book about two real life fascinating lives that you may have never heard about. The audiobook version is wonderfully narrated by Jenna Lamia, the voice of Sarah Grimke, and Adepero Oduye, the voice of Hetty.
