Arabella of Mars by David D. Levine
YA Fiction
What it’s about: A heroic adventure novel full of space fairing galleons and crustaceous Martians, Arabella of Mars combines a steampunk setting with Regency sentimentalities. Arabella Ashby, a plucky seventeen year old with a penchant for working on automatons, must save her brother from her cousin’s murderous plot to steal the family fortune. But only boys can join the Navy or work on merchant ships, and as a result she must disguise herself as Arthur instead of Arabella and prove her worth as the lowest crew member on her journey to the red planet. An admirable attempt that straddles adult sci-fi and young adult fiction, this novel throws the audience right into the action and expects them to keep up.
Series alert: This novel is the first of three: followed by Arabella and the Battle of Venus and Arabella the Traitor of Mars.
Awards: 2016 Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy.
